Antabuse

Antabuse (disulfiram) is a drug that can be used by people trying to quit drinking but are unable to do so without any external help because of alcohol addiction they developed. The effects of this medicine are based on producing unpleasant side effects when any amounts of alcohol are consumed. If you drink any amount of alcohol after taking Antabuse (even within a 2-week period), the following reactions are most likely to happen: nausea, flushing, fast heartbeats, dizziness, thirst, chest pain, and low blood pressure. Therefore, you will be unable to drink any amounts of alcohol, or consume products that contain even the smallest amounts of alcohol, during this period. Make sure you inform your health care provider of any health problems you have or used to have, including any of the following ones: thyroid disease, brain damage, liver disease, mental disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, or seizure disorder. The conditions mentioned can affect the dose you are prescribed or your health care provider will monitor you for side effects having prescribed the usual dose to make sure you are benefitting from the treatment. Never share your Antabuse with other people, as your dose is based on your individual needs.
